The NOVACES Economic Development team has supported recovery efforts for 30 federally declared disasters. While each disaster calls for a unique recovery strategy, built on the affected community’s priorities and aspirations, the scope of NOVACES’ disaster recovery work frequently encompasses these areas:
- Conducting economic impact assessments and workforce analyses
- Designing strategic economic initiatives to meet local priorities
- Supporting economic disaster recovery and resilience planning, including economic forecasting
- Delivering training for local capacity building and skills development
- Identifying and deploying industry subject matter experts
- Creating websites to announce events, facilitate outreach and transparency, and serve as a repository for documents
- Providing project management services, including process improvement and data management
Accomplishments From Recent
Disaster Recovery Operations
Delivered grant management training events and capacity-building workshops, which improved the skills of 400 professionals to secure federal and philanthropic funding.
Wrote foundational sections of the long-term economic recovery plan for Maui, Hawaii, after devastating wildfires.
Researched and prepared a logistics and infrastructure study, as well as an evaluation of barriers to business recovery for Hawaii.
Interviewed industry leaders and other stakeholders to help shape long-term regional economic resilience planning in multiple states and U.S. territories.
Coordinated two California Coastal Project Proposal Feedback events where potential grant applicants presented 18 coastal resilience projects to federal and state agency funding specialists.
Developed a webinar series for Kentucky recovery featuring creative financing and technical assistance for businesses, agriculture, and tourism recovery and workforce development.
Supported multiple states in the best use of Dislocated Worker Grants.
Provided states with a nationwide study of how to use HUD CDBG DR funding for economic recovery.
Co-hosted (in partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York) the Connect to Grow Small Business Summit, with more than 400 small business participants.
Coordinated the signing of two MOUs to create a framework for regional collaboration around resilience in the Caribbean.
Provided technical assistance to establish the first economic development district (EDD) in Puerto Rico and built the supporting website to provide transparency and facilitate local feedback.
