Although Lean Six Sigma has its roots in traditional manufacturing, it also is helping to improve above-the-shop floor or so called back-office operations in those same organizations. Transactions are an integral part of business. Some transactions are simple, however most are complex and grow over time into unwieldy processes that are no longer competitive and drain resources. Insurance and banking transactions, for example, can take days or weeks to complete, resulting in customer dissatisfaction and extra costs.

In services, defects in transactional processes are difficult to identify and carry over into subsequent steps. In addition work-in-process (WIP) is concealed on computers and desks throughout the enterprise. Managers use Lean Six Sigma tools and its DMAIC roadmap to define, measure, analyze, improve, and control critical processes to deliver higher quality in less time.
